Avoiding milk Protein

Avoiding Cross contamination, in the kichen, and factory policies.

In the Home

If you decide on a milk free home this will depend on the ages of family members, the
degree of the allergy and many other factors. the following suggestions and hints are
for those using milk in the allergic kitchen.

  • All family members must use the same system in kitchen.

  • For the severly allergic product should be read once in the gracery store, second time
while being put away, third while being served.

  • If within your risk level, On a BBQ seperately wrap in foil, milk free items.

  • In cupboard, have a sealed container marked "contains milk" for all your unsafe foods

  • In the same cupboard in a open basket marked "safe foods" put your safe foods in here
for easy access for you, and other adults

  • Consider putting "unsafe" foods in sealed container in fridge

  • Deside on system for sorting and washing cutlery/ cooking equipment and how you are
going to clean these items. Are you going to wash the cutting board that you used to cut
cheese with the same plate you will serve your child? This is more of a concern for
anaphilatic families. I don't like disposable dishes, enviromentaly but they have a purpose
for the anaphilatic family. You may want to wash "infected dishes" fist before
    washing with common dishwasher.

  • Microwave splatter is a fairly common place for cross contamination to happen

  • Allergic Children should never be put on food clean up duty

  • You may want to concider a "allergy eatting room" or a neighbours house for the odd
treat of "unsafe foods" This may ease sibling resentment. If the family memmber has
severe allergy you may want to do a clothing cheak for allergic matterial other wise
    known as food drips.

  • Double dipping in food platers high cross contamination risk.

  • Knife travelling from butter to spread or from peanutbutter jar to jam high risk
    of cross contamination.

    In the factory

  • co-packaging or third party packaging can cause cross contamination. This is when
a third party (other manufactuer) runs other products on the same line as your package.

  • Some speciality companies do random or between batches testing of allergens
on equipment. Some allow for some residue of food contamination.

  • "May Contain" is sometimes an excuse for poor cleanning. May contain can meen
anything from allergen in the factory on or off the same line as your product.

    In the grocery store

  • Sometimes milk can be on the convaer belt, you can lesson the risk by using
    grocery bins

  • If your buying both milk and non milk products you canseperate them out in the cart
to help organize them when you go out.

  • For severly reactive, ingredient lists should be read three times once at the
store, as lists change. Once at home, incase you where distracted, Third time before serving
